Myths to bust : Computer glasses

Computer glasses aka blue light glasses are believed to work wonders to reduce eye strain and in improving sleep hygiene. They are advertised for blocking all the blue light from screens. This has a more work to with your mind than those glasses can actually do. All the colours in an electronic screen is made of just three ingredients: Red, blue and green. If a glass could block all the incoming blue light, then you could see pictures only in shade of red, green and yellow. But computer glasses are designed to reduce the intensity of blue light only to a very low extent. These glasses are actually made to help with our circadian rhythm where we are very less exposed to blue light after sunset and getting our brain ready that it is night. Too much exposure to any light, especially UV light can cause eye strain but UV index is negligible in indoors. Being the next to UV rays, certain amount of blue light can promote human eye refractive development and regulate circadian rhythm, but harmful blue light-induced effects on human eyes should not be ignored, blue light can also produce different degree of damage to corneal(first layer of eye where light gets in), crystal lens and retina. So, it is necessary to take appropriate protective measures when using blue light-related products, especially at night. Hope I have confused to an extent.

In a nutshell:

  • 1. Reduced exposure to blue light after sunset can improve your sleep hygiene.
  • 2. A simple blue light filter in your device can work the same as those expensive glasses do.
  • 3. Practice your eyes to work with an optimal brightness levels to limit light intake at night.

Hope this would be helpful to all digital screen users.
